In our last blog post, we talked about the importance of family portrait sessions (specifically generational-themed photo sessions) and the legacy that they can leave behind for future generations.
Far too often, when loved ones pass away, family members find themselves scrambling to gather photos that capture the essence of their departed. In these moments of grief and loss, photographs become cherished treasures, offering solace and preserving memories of shared moments. A family photoshoot is not merely a session to capture smiles; it's an investment in memories, a testament to the importance of family, and a gift to future generations, ensuring that the legacy of love endures long after we're gone. In this post, we want to share with you some of our tips on how to maximize your family portrait session so that you not only have beautiful photos of yourself and your loved ones but also have one of the most fun and memorable days of your life!!
#1 Book In Advance: It is a very good idea to schedule your family session well in advance (1-3 months)!!! This will allow ample time for such things as planning outfits/color schemes, coordinating schedules, and developing concepts with your photographer. It may also give you the opportunity to personalize the shoot according to your preferences, ensuring the final product reflects the unique style and personality of your family. Sophia Barrett Studios specializes in creative portraiture that requires time to plan and execute. If your desire is for something truly unique a 3 month lead time is perfect. Another advantage to booking early is that it helps to greatly reduce stress and anxiety as you'll have more time to plan and prepare without feeling pressured to make last-minute decisions or adjustments. Overall, scheduling your family photo shoot well in advance offers numerous benefits that contribute to a smoother, more organized, and enjoyable experience for you and your family.
#2 Coordinate Schedules: Be sure to coordinate schedules with all family members in advance to ensure everyone arrives in a timely manner. This will help to make sure that the use of time is optimized during the photo shoot, maximizing efficiency and productivity to capture a wide variety of shots and poses within the allotted time frame. Sophia Barrett Studios will coordinate a schedule with you and your family to ensure this happens. Pro tip: If you have babies or young children be sure to plan the photoshoot around the times when they typically nap or are irritable.
#3 Take Individual Photos: If possible I strongly suggest that each person take at least one individual photograph!!! As I mentioned earlier family portraits become cherished keepsakes that can be passed down through generations, preserving memories of loved ones for years to come. Including individual shots ensures that each family member is represented in the family's photographic legacy. In addition, Including individual shots adds variety to the collection of portraits, providing different compositions, angles, and expressions to choose from. This diversity enriches the overall visual appeal of your portrait session and offers more options for creating personalized albums or displays. One final added benefit of taking individual photos is that they can often be used for personal marketing and branding. They can be very handy for things such as social media and professional headshots.
#4 Take The Day Off: By taking the day off from work/school you and your family members can approach the photo shoot in a relaxed and stress-free manner. Family photography sessions are not just about creating beautiful photos most importantly the main goal is to have a fun and memorable experience with your family… it can serve as an opportunity for quality family time spent together!! Without the pressure of work or school commitments, everyone can fully enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or distracted.
#5 Plan For a Family Lunch or Dinner After Your Shoot: After the photo session is completed, you and your family should continue to enjoy the rest of the day/evening together. What better way to relax, celebrate, and reminisce about the fun experience you all shared during the shoot than by enjoying a nice meal as a family? Make it experience…. Treat yourself and visit that new swanky restaurant that opened up downtown, or maybe you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and just decide to go to your favorite neighborhood BBQ restaurant… you could even hire a private chef to come to your home to prepare a meal!!! There is no right or wrong choice as long you enjoy each other’s company!!!
#6 Coordinate Color Palettes: Work with your photographer to choose a cohesive color palette so that everyone complements each other and the studio environment. Coordinating colors creates a sense of visual harmony in the photos, making them more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. When colors complement each other well, they create a uniform and balanced look that enhances the overall aesthetic of the photographs. Sophia Barrett Studios specializes in styling the entire family and curates looks according to each person's individual personality and taste.
#7 Don’t Be Afraid To Mix Textures and Patterns: Don’t be afraid to work with your photographer to incorporate a variety of textures and subtle patterns into your outfits to add depth and visual interest to the photos. Mix fabrics like denim, knits, lace, and chiffon for a stylish yet cohesive look.
