When Should You Take Maternity Photos?

One of the questions I hear often is when to schedule a maternity photoshoot.

While every pregnancy is different, many women choose the late second to early third trimester, when the pregnancy is beautifully visible but they’re still comfortable enough to enjoy the experience and move through artistic posing.

There’s no single “right” time, but I generally don’t recommend waiting too close to your due date. As pregnancy progresses, comfort, flexibility, and mobility can change, which may affect the types of poses you’re able to comfortably explore.

More importantly, think about what you want these photographs to preserve.

When planning your maternity session, don’t only look for inspiration based on how you want the images to look. Think about your history, your story, and what you want your children and future grandchildren to understand about you during this chapter of your life.

That story becomes the inspiration.

Pregnancy changes so much more than a woman’s body.

It changes the way she moves through the world. The way she sees herself. The way she understands strength.

There are changes that are celebrated and others that can be difficult to embrace. There are moments when you recognize yourself completely, and others when you look in the mirror and wonder when everything became so different.

But there is beauty in remembering that the body is not failing you through those changes.

It is doing something extraordinary.

It is making room for life.

The Sacrifice of Motherhood

Motherhood asks a woman to stretch in ways she could never fully prepare for.

The body sacrifices.

That is one of the things I find so powerful about maternity portraits.

We are not simply photographing a pregnant woman.

We are photographing a woman in the middle of becoming someone new.

A mother.

There is strength in that transformation, even when the process feels uncomfortable. There is beauty in the parts of the journey that are not always easy to explain.

And sometimes, the photographs become a way of honoring all of it.
