Some clients come to me with a very specific idea of what they want.
Others come with a feeling.
Shekevia came with both.
She had dreamed about working with Sophia Barrett Studios for years, and by the time we finally sat down for her consultation, she already knew this experience needed to mean more than simply creating beautiful photographs.
She wanted to celebrate where she was.
She wanted to acknowledge everything that had happened along the way.
And she wanted the photographs to feel like her.
That is always an important distinction for me.
I can create the lighting, build the set, guide the posing, and make all of the decisions that happen behind the camera. But the reason a portrait feels personal has very little to do with any of those things.
It starts with knowing what the person in front of you wants to remember.
Why This Session Mattered
Shekevia was approaching 40, but this wasn’t simply a birthday photoshoot.
A little over a year earlier, she had suffered a major knee injury that changed the rhythm of her life. Recovery became one of the toughest challenges she had faced.
When she described that period to me, what stayed with me wasn’t only what had happened.
It was where she was now.
She described herself as stronger and wiser, stepping into a new chapter with gratitude and power.
That gave the entire experience a different context.
We weren’t photographing someone who had simply arrived at a milestone.
We were photographing someone who had been through a difficult season and wanted to mark the fact that she was on the other side of it.
There is something very meaningful about that.
Creating Something That Feels Like You
One of the things Shekevia said in her testimonial was that she wanted to capture “something deeply personal; a reflection of my life’s journey, full of ups and downs all while finding beauty in the chaos and a celebration of where I am now.”
That sentence stayed with me because it describes what I hope happens in a portrait session.
Not perfection.
Not a performance.
A reflection.
The studio becomes a place where all of those things can come together. The styling, the set, the hair and makeup, the lighting, the direction, the music, the conversations in between photographs. Every detail contributes to the experience, but none of it matters if the final images don’t feel connected to the person they were created for.
With Shekevia, we had a clear understanding of what she wanted to see.
She wanted strong, Black, timeless beauty.
She wanted regal.
Bold.
Fun.
Fearless.
Those weren’t just adjectives for a mood board. They gave us a sense of the woman we were photographing and the way she wanted this chapter of her life remembered.
The Part You Don’t See
There is always so much work that happens before a portrait ever reaches the final gallery.
There are conversations about what the client wants.
There are decisions about styling and set design.
There are moments of adjusting, trying something different, changing the light, changing the pose, looking at the image and knowing something isn’t quite there yet.
Then there are the moments when everything settles.
The client stops thinking about what they’re supposed to do.
The team stops adjusting.
And everyone in the room knows we’ve found it.
Those are some of my favorite moments.
Because that’s when the photograph stops feeling like something we’re constructing and starts feeling like something we’re discovering.
A Dream Worth Doing
After the session, Shekevia told me that shooting with me had been a dream she had carried for years.
I don’t take that lightly.
There are so many things people tell themselves they’ll do someday.
Sometimes the years pass and someday never comes.
So there was something especially meaningful about watching Shekevia finally have the experience she had imagined for so long.
Not because the photographs marked the end of something.
Because they marked her decision to celebrate where she was.
Her words at the end of the experience said it best:
“I felt confident that Sophia could bring my story to life capturing the beauty in the chaos and the triumph over setbacks.”
That is the part I hope every client feels when they leave the studio.
That we didn’t simply take their picture.
That we listened.
That we understood what they wanted this moment to mean.
And that together, we created something they can return to years from now and still recognize themselves in.
More Than the Final Image
Shekevia also spoke about our team, mentioning the attention to detail, warmth, and professionalism she experienced from beginning to end.
That means a great deal to me because the final photograph is only one part of what we do.
The experience matters.
The way someone feels walking into the studio matters.
The care that goes into preparing for them matters.
The details they may never see matter.
And when all of those things come together, the result is more than a collection of beautiful images.
It becomes an experience that belongs to them.
Shekevia waited years for this one.
